Coprinus comatus
(O.F. Müll.) Pers.

Common Names
Description
An unmistakable mushroom shaped like a scaly white cylinder that, astonishingly, self-digests and turns into black ink within hours after maturing. Beyond this rarity, it is one of the most formidable hypoglycemic (blood sugar-lowering) agents discovered by medical science.
Ecology
Saprobic and also nematophagous (carnivorous towards microscopic worms), it grows aggressively in heavily manured or nitrogen-rich soils, often appearing overnight.

Phytochemical Profile
Vanadium
This mushroom bioaccumulates trace amounts of vanadium. Vanadium compounds have an 'insulin-mimetic' effect, meaning they mimic the action of insulin in the body.
Comatin
A unique compound that has demonstrated a potent blood sugar-lowering effect.
gpp_bad Warnings & Contraindications
- Do not confuse with *Coprinopsis atramentaria* (Common Ink Cap), which causes coprine syndrome if consumed with alcohol. *Coprinus comatus* does NOT contain coprine and is safe with alcohol.
- Must be consumed or processed strictly when the gills are still white, before deliquescence.
medical_services Clinical Benefits
- Severe Diabetes Control (Hypoglycemic): Its compounds mimic insulin, allowing cells to absorb glucose from the blood even when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (insulin-mimetic effect).
- Weight Loss and Metabolism: Helps break insulin resistance in metabolic syndrome, facilitating cellular weight control.
- Pancreatic Protection: Protects and partially regenerates the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.
history_edu Traditional Uses
- Traditional Chinese Medicine: Used to improve digestion, treat hemorrhoids, calm nerves, and recently for 'sweet urine disease' (diabetes).
warning Interactions & Precautions
- Insulin and Antidiabetic Drugs: CAUTION. Can cause hypoglycemia (dangerous blood sugar drop) if taken alongside injected insulin or drugs like metformin, as the effects are additive.
science Extraction Methods
- Rapid Drying and Powder: Because it liquefies, it must be dehydrated immediately after harvest. The dried powder is used as a supplement.
scale Standard Dosage
Dried mushroom powder: 1 to 3 grams daily, monitoring blood glucose levels.
