Pleurotus ostreatus

Common Names
Description
Besides being one of the most cultivated and resilient edible mushrooms in the world, the Oyster Mushroom is a veritable chemical factory. It is one of the few documented natural sources of Lovastatin, a compound capable of drastically reducing LDL cholesterol.
Ecology
A white-rot fungus that decomposes fallen trees. Curiously, it is also a carnivorous fungus: its mycelium paralyzes and digests nematodes (microscopic worms) in the wood to obtain nitrogen.

Pleuran
An insoluble beta-glucan isolated from this species that has potent immunological effects and antiviral properties.
gpp_bad Warnings & Contraindications
- Spore Load: Massive cultivation facilities often cause 'mushroom worker's lung' due to the immense quantities of spores it releases. It should be harvested before full maturity.
medical_services Clinical Benefits
- Cholesterol Control (Hypolipidemic): Regular consumption (fresh or extract) significantly lowers triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, preventing atherosclerosis.
- Metabolic Management: Helps stabilize blood glucose, making it an excellent functional food for patients with prediabetes or metabolic syndrome.
- Immune and Respiratory Support: The polysaccharide Pleuran has clinically demonstrated a reduction in the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections in children and athletes.
history_edu Traditional Uses
- European and Asian Medicine: Used to strengthen tendons and veins, and to promote the 'relaxation of muscles and joints'.
warning Interactions & Precautions
- Pharmaceutical Statins: Caution advised if already taking synthetic statins (e.g., Atorvastatin), as there may be an additive effect on the liver.
science Extraction Methods
- Functional Food: Lovastatin survives moderate cooking. Regular dietary intake is sufficient to see lipid benefits.
scale Standard Dosage
Culinary therapeutic: 30 to 90 grams of fresh mushroom per day. Extract supplements: 1 to 3 grams daily.
