Description

Considered a national treasure in Taiwan and one of the most expensive medicinal mushrooms in the world. It grows exclusively inside the hollow trunk of an endemic Taiwanese tree species. It is legendary for curing hangovers, protecting the liver from alcohol damage, and serving as a severe treatment against hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer).

Ecology

A saprobic and weakly parasitic fungus causing brown rot. It inhabits almost exclusively the heartwood of ancient Cinnamomum kanehirae trees in the mountainous jungles of Taiwan, a habitat now protected by law.

The Stout Camphor Fungus (Antrodia cinnamomea) is internationally known as the “Ruby of Taiwan.” With its dazzling, intense red-orange color and penetrating cinnamon-camphor aroma, it grows in the hollow heart of an ancient and endemic tree in the Taiwanese mountains.

Pharmacologically, it is perhaps nature’s most aggressive hepatoprotective agent.
